Practical guide

Define a funnel around decisions rather than page views

Separate a visit, a qualified evaluation and a paid account.

ContractCanvas insights

Name the stage event

A content visit indicates attention. A qualified session requires an identified workflow and relevant participant. Activation should mean completing the core task. A paid account requires an accepted offer and actual commercial record. These events should not share one optimistic “lead” count.

Preserve denominators

For each period, retain counts entering and leaving the stage and the reason for exclusion. If three of twelve qualified accounts accept an offer, the observed conversion is 25% for that cohort. It does not establish the rate for all future campaigns.

Handle zero honestly

If a campaign produces no paying accounts, report spend and zero conversions. Acquisition cost per paying account is undefined, not zero. The result may still reveal a targeting or product issue worth addressing.

Use the record to choose

Review where relevant people stop: permission, task completion, repeat use or buying authority. Change the specific problem before expanding distribution. ContractCanvas’s acquisition workbook starts with empty actual-result fields so illustrative arithmetic cannot be mistaken for traction.
